Many thanks to Alun for coming up on Sunday and bringing his guys Rob, Matt and Chris to give us some training in the TBD Goshinkwai system.
We got straight down to things with a footwork drill and even though we only really covered two techniques – a response to a left handed attack and a response to a right handed attack – the three hours seemed to go past very quickly. That was fine with me as I would much rather spend a long time on doing a couple of things in-depth than skimming the surface of lots of different things.
Alun was constantly circulating to give feedback and advice and the guys who came with him were excellent training partners. I picked up something useful from all of them whether it was about balance, generating power in a move etc.
I’d attended a previous Goshinkwai training session and saw the same key components here – footwork and fast, aggressive strikes to create an overwhelming response. This time I also felt how adaptable the system is. The same basic response could lead to restraining a drunk mate or be taken further to violently stop an attacker. The responses weren’t written in stone either so the experienced guys there were adapting their moves to what worked for them. There was nothing flashy in the moves either. It was all stuff like palms, elbows, short punches and hammerfists.
I got a lot from the training and look forward to seeing more of the system at the next session.
Cheers!
