sweeping for the street

Post  mickeybluejeans on Mon Dec 26, 2011 5:42 am

what's best? a 30inch soft bristle or 24inch hard bristle Very Happy Very Happy

ok..ok .... I found it funny Razz Razz

for maximum effect should we sweep the supporting leg to cause damage or sweep the other leg to knock of balance

I can create a massive amount of power in a low level sweep or kick.... enough i believe to seriously damage what ever I make contact with, so should i go for the supporting leg which will remain at first stationary and take the full power of the kick or take out the non supporting leg causing them to go down

(a basic question from a not too experienced MA)

Do you mean for the street or MMA, imo for the street any opportunity that presents itself than take full advantage, of course this depends on your presence of mind and the ability to keep your arse cheeks together, for MMA or any sport Karate etc then I personally would take the leg that most of his weight is on !

Mickey,

A good sweep requires no power at all...in fact, it's so subtle the recipient shouldn't be able to figure out what happened. One minute he's standing and the next minute he's on his arse wondering how he got there.

It's a timing thing; just as he's about to put weight on his foot you sweep it - almost gently - and all of a sudden he's on his butt.

I used to watch the shotokan guys kicking the fook out of each other's legs because they basically were making up for a lack of skill with power.

Grab a Judo guy and get him to teach you how...if he's any good he'll be able to show you in pretty sharp order.

Personally, I do not like leg sweeps for self protection. From my observatrions, it could off balance you and cause damage to your leg while initiating.

I once saw two guys going at it and one tried a sweep, both losed balance. Both went down. The "sweeper" became trapped under and his leg was damaged.

For protection/defense, always follow the KISS rule
