great skills, but I'm always suspicious of over pressured kids. the mohawk tells us everything we need to know about the dads intent for his kid and oxbridge/business/creative it isn't, even if he had the brain.

It will be so easy for the kid to rebel against his parents when he's a teenager. "I'm giving up wrestling. I want to be a mathematician!"

Huh? What's wrong with his hair? I don't see that it says anything about his parents, other than that they are fairly liberal, and don't believe in forcing their child to have any particular haircut... a 7-year-old is perfectly capable of picking his own hairstyle, and if he's a big wrestling fan -- which seems likely -- then a mohawk fits pretty well.

He's clearly a good, strong, and determined athlete.

Starting them that young is clearly why so many Americans believe as Gospel that 'all fights go to the ground'. Some do, some don't but the odds are in favour of doing so if both or all fighters have a background of wrestling. I watched an altercation in Marshal MN a few years ago and the two 18-21 year olds threw a couple of wild punches then went into a wrestling sequence and it was all so avoidable if they had been trained otherwise.

As for the boy and the mohawk, he does come from upstate New York so there is some geographical connection to be had. Also I am sure his father is a wrestling fan or coach. At least it keeps the buy off the streets and I am sure older kids don't bully him at school (so long as he throws his weight around only on the mat, ok). I do like the US Collegiate wrestling (is it the same as Olympic wrestling) as it is athletic and quick, good to watch and for me, better than UFC but not as good as boxing.

I recall someone saying once 75% of fights end up on the ground, but 100% start standing up

I have to say that if I had to put a percentage on my experiences it would be the other way with 25% ending up on the ground and then mostly because I am controlling him there in order to restrain and remove him. Then again, a lot more of my opponents have ended up on the ground but that was not the point in question. I do think there is a difference in outcomes between street fights and 'arrests' (for want of a more apt term).

Yes also that refers to people who have no training also. its like telling a formula one diver that most people drive less and 100mph. Most of the people on the forum I think generally try to finish a fight standing up. I know I do, though I have to admit I've not exactly battled for a long time

I find that I have to remind myself that the new student doesn't know what I know. I have to try and recall what it was like to be a beginner and when it was all new. One can fall into the trap of missing great chunks along the way because you know they won't need that once they get to 'X'... but of course without those chunks while they will get to 'X' they will have no idea of how they got there or why they are there in the first place.

A Karate organization I know and won't name fell into that deadly trap and took a lot of the syllabus out purely because the 5th dans in charge deemed them unnecessary as they never used them. It actually took out a lot of the exercises that allowed to the higher grades to do what they did

It is easy to forget the very basics as they become as natural as breathing.

I was talking to a friend recently in his boxing gym and we were watching his protege shadow boxing. While my friend explained how great this lad was on his way to being with his punches and speed I noticed that no one had told him not to cross his feet over each other when changing direction.

Basics, they should never become basics and forgotten but it is so easy to forget them.
