aikido?

Nick,

I got interested in aikido after reading about Peyton Quinn's experiences with it. I know that not all aikidos are alike, so I wanted to know what you thought of the system taught by David Dye's Shuyokai (I live near his Costa Mesa, CA dojo). Is it effective for self defense? I want something heavy on the combative or practical, lighter on the spiritual.

David's stuff would be just the ticket mate. He used to be with Yoshinkan (the Aikido of the Tokyo Riot Police and the Imperial Palace Guard) but it's my understanding they parted ways so he'd still be teaching the techniques albeit under a different label.

David was the instructor for the Mesa DT stuff as well and got to use it on the job quite a bit...I've trained with him so make sure to mention me if you drop in for a class.
