PostSubject: Self protection for women   Fri Aug 25, 2006 11:01 pm

Dave, just wondered if you know of, or can point me in the diection of, any techniques/videos/books/websites that deal specifically with women's defence and self-protection. Like rape-defence, awareness, techniques for physically weaker people etc.

It's something I want to be able to understand and perhaps show my girlfriend and some of her friends.

I have taught thaiboxing classes to people where women came up to me at the end and asked if I could show them self defence. I just showed them stuff I know like power slap, eye gouge, etc.

Any help much appreciated, thanks mate. study

Hi Dave,

What do think of
http://www.dr-ruthless.com/

I have had a look at the site and thought about getting the video, it looks interesting but I feel that not every women looking for some self defence training is ready to make the leap to the level of retaliation that some of these programmes take them to.

Alan - I like Dr Ruthless' tapes, some good material in there. Though it does have a big "USA" feel to it, if you get my drift.

Lee Morrison has a nice book on Women's SD, and I like parts of Steiner's books also.

Dave - what changes do you make, if any, from teaching say a 4hr general (i.e. mostly blokes) SD class and a women's SD class?

I wouldnt even classify 'womens' self-defence classes as anything even close to the mens stuff..
Now male and female martial arts should be almost identical.. but self defence NO

Men get 'attacked' in different ways for different reasons..

I always cover awareness.. date rape, drug rape.. harrassment, grabbing,, stalking and so much more for the women.. scenarios and only about 33% actual 'physical' work...

the attacks differ.. so the defences differ..

Its too long a subject on a post like this.. but they are two totally different subjects to be dealt with in totally different ways..
TALK to your women students.. ASK them what they fear most..not just.. Oh here is a heel of hand strike and a low kick.. that not what they want nor need

so to be honest Alan, if you saw the two classes you would see the massive differences between the two

women who have a desire to take up martial arts may have some interest in SD/SP, and good luck to them

however women up take up PURE SD/SP rarely have the same interest in the martial arts

Ready-Aware-Willing Vol. 1: Verbal Skills and Drills

DESCRIPTION
How the concepts and skills are practiced in Adrenal Stress Scenario Training (ASST): Featuring Michael Belzer.

Meredith Gold came to the world of reality based self defense and empowerment as a result of surviving an attempted abduction when she was a teenager.

She has been teaching Adrenal Stress Scenario Training (ASST) programs since 1992, having worked with the Impact Personal Saftey organization in Los Angeles, as well as Peyton Quinn's Rocky Mountain Combat Applications Training (RMCAT) in Colorado.

Meredith's primary focus has always been women's self defense and empowerment training, but as a contributing editor for Black Belt Magazine (who named her their Woman of the Year for 2003), she has been able to reach a new audience and expand her program to incorporate a variety of martial arts applications.

In 2000 Meredith and her husband Michael Belzer started the R-A-W Power program, offering training for men, women and teens. These self defense skills and drills are a perfect component designed for any martial arts curriculum.
