| Dave,
I'm thinking about how to solo train forward drive as well as power.
I'm wondering about the possibility of hanging a heavy bag on a pipe (structurally sound, of course, and not a water pipe - I'd hang the pipe between 2 4x4 poles about 10 feet apart).
Then I could drive the bag back as I drove forward, assuming my strikes hit hard enough.
What do you think? Worth trying? Or is there an obvious (or not-so-obvious) flaw that makes it not worth pursuing?

| Hope you don't mind me briefly jumping in here Dave!
JK,
That's the exact set up I had in my parent's garage as a kid, using a scaffolding pole and a loop of flat chain, that slid nicely along it, to hang the bag from.

| hey if anything that sounds like fun. wish i had space enough for that kind of set up. we have done a drill in stu's class a couple of times which involves holding a kick shield against the back and then taking it in turns to hammerfist each other across the mat. |

| It aint crazy .. I used to have two bags hanging from a chinning bar and pushed, palmed, hit, elbowed etc my way all around and through them.. some great swings at you to ensure you have 'stopping' power |

| Mr CQM - bows, whips, trebuchets youve got a wide range of missle range stuff to choose from there m8 And wheres our trebuchet videos!!! Nothing wrong with that idea - ive seen a well equipped dojo with 2 rows of bags with that style of swing. A important thing to note on the REALLY heavy bags the really powerful stuff that lifts them up - ie cowcatching will break the chains fast. Done it 3 times on the massive 5foot radius bag |

| Ah, Tony, the trebuchet videos.
Sam, Chris (good friend) and I took Ludgar the War Wolf, our 5 foot trebuchet, to the beach last weekend. Built a big, fine sand castle, and levelled it with the catapult. The videos did not turn out. Way too small.
And we learned an important lesson - baseballs work much better than golf balls when demolishing sandcastles. So next time, we're coming with a goodly supply of baseballs. And hopefully, a better video camera.

| Hi JK I'm struggling to find a way of safely hanging my bag. Yours sounds like a great way of doing it. Can you definately post some pictures when done so I can blantantly rip off your design. Cheers Craig |

| Sorry, Taz, forgot about that. Here you go. Pipe mounted (lag screws and pipe flange) to 4x4 posts. Bag hung from pipe. Pretty simple, actually. It's not a sturdy as I might like, the pipe has some flex to it so I won't do any standing grappling type stuff with it, but it takes strikes pretty darn well. If I hit from the side, it swings like a regular heavy bag. Or I can drive it from one end to the other, about 10 feet total (so about 8 feet useable). Bag is 100 lbs. |

| Nice one JK !!
I've already been to B&Q today and purchased loads of wood as i'm not lucky enough to already have a structure.
I possess zero DIY skills so this should be fun. But it WILL be hung !!
Cheers

| Just caught up with this thread, a bit late I know... Am going to try somethig similar in my garage, I've got some stuff I can probably use, might test my DIY skills as well!!
Looks like a great idea though, never thought about it before, even though I had got frustrated by the bag just hanging/swinging. I'll post again in a day or two, let you know how it goes

| Got it sorted, in a fashion... Didn't have any metal pipe or similar, so I used a hard wood handrail, oval shape in section. Knew it wouldn't slide aswell, but hey, it's not like I punch like a girl, is it? Got it set up, middle of a 6 foot stretch, lined it up with a fence and wallop! Big right cross. Didn't move at all!! After another couple of punches, I realised the weight was just too much, the chains digging into the wood at the top. Really f*cked of after all the effort, so on the way out of the garage, I gave it a parting shot with an elbow. And guess what? It moved!! Ha ha ha - I then realised that despite all the aggro, this might be a good thing. Cos if I can shift the bag along with punches aswell as elbows, then i really would be generating some power. So now I have a training routine lined up for the next couple of weeks. Ever cloud has a silver lining etc Paul |
